  • Then click on Apply button and then ok button.

Once you are done with all these steps, updates will stop downloading automatically. But whenever there is a new update becomes available. You will receive a notification to download and install updates manually from the Windows Update settings page.

How to disable windows 10 update using Registry?

You can also use Registry to control how you install Windows updates on your computer. Or you can simply disable it.

Disabling updates

In case if you want to disable Windows 10 permanently. Then I am going to mention the steps shortly. But first, let me tell you that editing Registry files is a risky job. And it can cause serious trouble on your computer  without warning. So if you understand what you are doing. Then only you should proceed ahead. Anyway, you can follow these steps:

  • First of all, Go to start.
  • Then search for regedit and enter into the menu.
  • Now you have to go to this following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  • Then right click on Windows key and then select New and then click on Key.
  • You have to name the new Key as WindowsUpdate and hit enter button.
  • Then right click on WindowsUpdate Key then select new and click on Key.
  • Name this key AU and hit the enter button.
  • Now right click on the right side and select new and click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  • Name this value as NoAutoUpdate and hit enter button.
  • Then double click on it and change the value from 0 to 1.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Restart your computer.

Once you are done with these steps, Windows update should stop trying to download and install updates on your device. In case if you want to update manually then you can perform the job from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and clicking the Check for updates button and you can turn off Windows 10 update.

Limiting updates

In case if by using Registry, you cannot be able to disable updates or it is not working as expected. Then you can also use the Registry to customize the Windows update settings to prevent updates from getting installed on your computer. To customize Windows updates settings, you can follow these steps:

  • Go to the start.
  • Then search for regedit and enter into the menu.
  • Now you have to go to this following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  • Then right click on the Windows Key and select New and then click on Key.
  • Name this Key as WindowsUpdate and press Enter.
  • Right click on the newly created Key, select New, and click on Key.
  • Name the new Key as AU and press enter.
  • Right click on the right side, select New, and click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  • Name the new key AUOptions and press Enter.
  • Double-click the newly created Key and change its value (number only) using one of the following options:

2 — Notify for download and auto install.

3 — Auto download and notify for install.

4 — Auto download and schedule the install.

5 — Allow local admin to choose settings.

  • Click the OK button.
  • Restart your computer.
